The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended Alhaji Muhammad Naziru Ya’u, Chairman of Rano Local Government Council, for three months following serious allegations of misconduct.
The decision, made during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Alhaji Jibril Isma’il Falgore, comes after a detailed investigation by the House Committee on Public Petition.
The committee’s probe was initiated by a petition signed by nine of the ten councillors in Rano, accusing Ya’u of financial recklessness, unauthorized sale of shops, and diversion of fertiliser allocated to the local government.
Presenting the findings, Committee Chairman and Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala noted that, despite Ya’u’s denial of the allegations, the evidence warranted further scrutiny.
Citing Section 128 of the Constitution and Section 55 (1–6) of the Kano State Local Government Law 2006, the committee recommended a three-month suspension to facilitate a thorough investigation.
Additional measures include mandating the immediate submission of Rano LGA’s 2025 financial statement and appointing the vice chairman to act in Ya’u’s place during the suspension period.
“Following extensive deliberations, the House adopted the committee’s recommendations, suspending the chairman and placing Rano Local Government under temporary oversight,” Dala announced.
The suspension has sparked discussions on social media with some users praising the Assembly’s swift action as a step toward accountability, while others question the political motives behind the move.
The outcome of the ongoing investigation is expected to shape public trust in Kano’s local governance as the state navigates these allegations.
