The Kaduna State Government has commenced a comprehensive reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS) to transform it into an international-standard facility, following its official takeover from the Federal Government.
The ambitious project aims to restore the stadium’s former glory, attract foreign investment, and position Kaduna as a hub for sports and economic growth.
During a tour of the facility on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the Commissioner of Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, highlighted the dire state of the stadium, which was originally built in 1964.
“The Ahmadu Bello Stadium has deteriorated significantly, making it unfit for national events, let alone continental or international competitions,” Maiyaki said.
He emphasized Governor Uba Sani’s vision to deliver a world-class venue that will revive Kaduna’s sporting heritage and create job opportunities for the state’s youth.
Maiyaki recalled Kaduna’s golden era in Nigerian football, when the state produced over half of the national team, including stars like Emmanuel and Celestine Babayaro, Tijani Babangida, and Garba Lawal.
“Our high-quality facilities were key to that success. This reconstruction will bring back those days and position Kaduna as a leader in African sports,” he said.
The Commissioner for Sports Development, Professor Benjamin Kumai Gugong, provided details on the project, which is funded under the 2025 budget and will be executed in phases.
The first phase will focus on renovating the main stadium, two practice fields, a 48-room hostel, and facilities for basketball, handball, beach soccer, and beach volleyball.
“Upon completion, ABS will meet FIFA and CAF hosting standards, enabling us to host top-tier international competitions,” Gugong stated.
The reconstruction is expected to not only elevate Kaduna’s sporting infrastructure but also stimulate economic activity through tourism and job creation.
Governor Sani’s administration is committed to delivering the project on time, with stakeholders expressing optimism about its potential to restore Kaduna’s status as a powerhouse in Nigerian and African sports.
Further updates on the project’s progress and timelines are expected as the state government moves forward with this transformative initiative.
