Jonathan Is PDP’s Best Bet for 2027 Presidential Election - Sule Lamido

Former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s strongest candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido urged the PDP to actively woo Jonathan back, describing him as unmatched in experience and electability among southern party members.

“I think for PDP now, they should try and woo him; he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said, emphasizing Jonathan’s prior presidential experience and collaborative leadership style.

“He’s been in office, he listens, he values collaboration, and he’s a mature and composed leader. If the presidency is zoned to the South, who else in the PDP can match him?”

Lamido’s endorsement comes amid speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to the PDP, with political insiders suggesting behind-the-scenes efforts to position him as a formidable challenger to President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Despite official PDP denials of actively courting Jonathan, Lamido argued that no current southern PDP member rivals his governance expertise and national appeal. “I don’t see any other person, really. He’s competent, very qualified,” he added.

The former governor also used the platform to call for the expulsion of PDP members like Nyesom Wike, Samuel Ortom, and Okezie Ikpeazu, accusing them of sabotaging the party during the 2023 elections and pledging support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

“All those erring members who openly campaigned against the PDP should be sacked,” Lamido said, criticizing the party’s leadership for failing to enforce its constitution against anti-party activities.

Jonathan, who lost his re-election bid in 2015, has maintained a low political profile but remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.

His potential comeback has sparked debate, with some seeing it as a strategic move to unify the PDP and challenge Tinubu, while others question his willingness to re-enter the fray.

The PDP’s National Working Committee recently warned members against supporting Tinubu, signaling internal efforts to rally around a strong candidate for 2027.

Lamido’s remarks have intensified discussions about the PDP’s strategy, with Jonathan’s name gaining traction as a potential game-changer in the upcoming election.

As the 2027 race heats up, the party faces the challenge of consolidating its base and addressing internal divisions to mount a credible challenge.
