Ibadan Mourns as Late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, is Laid to Rest

The ancient city of Ibadan came to a standstill on Friday as residents, dignitaries, and traditional leaders gathered to bid farewell to the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, during a solemn funeral service at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Aremo.

The emotional ceremony marked the final chapter in the life of a monarch whose reign left an indelible mark on Ibadan and its people.

The service, attended by hundreds, was filled with tributes celebrating Oba Olakulehin’s legacy of peace, unity, and selfless leadership.

Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, Archbishop of the Ibadan Province (Anglican Communion), delivered a moving sermon, describing the late monarch as “a father, a guide, and a beacon of hope.”

He praised Oba Olakulehin’s unwavering commitment to justice and the welfare of his people, noting that his wisdom fostered dialogue and unity across diverse groups in Ibadan during turbulent times.

“His reign exemplified the power of love and unity,” Aladekugbe said, urging attendees to honor the Olubadan’s memory by upholding the values of compassion and inclusivity he championed.

The bishop emphasized that Oba Olakulehin’s dedication to the cultural heritage and progress of Ibadan would remain etched in the city’s history.

The funeral marked the end of an era for Ibadan land, but Oba Olakulehin’s legacy of fostering harmony and cultural pride continues to resonate.

As the city reflects on his contributions, residents are called to carry forward his vision of a united and just community.
