The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has recovered over N1.1 billion from Abdullahi Rogo, Director-General of Protocol at the Kano State Government House, as part of an investigation into alleged N6.5 billion contract-related financial irregularities.
The recovered funds have been forfeited to the government’s recovery account, an ICPC source confirmed.
The ICPC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are probing claims of misappropriated public funds through fictitious contracts, allegedly funneled through corporate entities and personal accounts.
Court documents reveal some contracts linked to the funds were neither awarded nor executed.Rogo challenged the investigation, filing a case at the Kano State High Court in Bichi to contest his detention and potential prosecution.
The ICPC, however, urged the court to dismiss his application, arguing it was an attempt to obstruct their work. Separately, the ICPC secured a Federal High Court order for the interim forfeiture of N142 million suspected to be illegally acquired.
After no claimants responded to a public notice, the court ordered the final forfeiture of the funds on July 2, citing their connection to corrupt practices involving Rogo.
The Kano State Government, however, has denied the allegations of N6.5 billion misappropriation, calling them politically motivated attacks aimed at discrediting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.
In a statement, Sanusi Bature DawakinTofa, Director General of Media and Publicity, emphasized that financial transactions in state agencies adhere to strict budgetary and public finance rules.
The government defended Rogo, describing him as a trusted aide, and clarified that the Protocol Directorate handles administrative duties with fully documented transactions.
Accusing opposition groups of spreading misinformation ahead of the 2027 elections, the state vowed to pursue legal action against those tarnishing its officials’ reputations.
It reiterated its commitment to transparency but will refrain from further comments until the court’s ruling.Investigations by the ICPC and EFCC are ongoing, with no criminal convictions recorded yet.
