Hisbah Bans DJs, Mixed-Gender Attendance at Social Gatherings in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Sharia’h Commission’s Hisbah Command has introduced stringent regulations to govern social gatherings, including marriage ceremonies and birthday celebrations, in response to rising complaints about social vices and breaches of public peace.

The new guidelines, outlined in a statement dated July 16, 2025, aim to enforce moral conduct and ensure compliance across recreational centers, clubs, and cultural events in the state.

Titled “Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and other Festivals in Bauchi State,” the statement, signed by Permanent Commissioner Hisbah, Barrister Aminu Balarabe Isah, lists strict rules to address public concerns.

Key prohibitions include:Mixing of opposite  between opposite sexes, especially in the presence of children and infants.

. Buying, selling, or consuming intoxicants of any kind.

. Entry of individuals carrying weapons of any type.

. Seating arrangements that disregard gender segregation.

. Acts capable of inciting public unrest.

. Suspension of all activities during designated prayer times.

. Use of blasphemous or abusive language against individuals or authorities.

. Events organized by one gender must only be attended by that gender.

. Traditional activities like the Fulani Sharo or Shadi, Garaya, Kauyawa Day, DJ performances, Gala, and Aloba.

. Gambling, prostitution, and other immoral acts in all venues, including hotels and recreational centers.

. Exhibition of pornographic films, whether privately or publicly.

. Birthday celebrations promoting immorality.

The command emphasized that traditional dress codes must be strictly followed, and all recreational centers, clubs, and cultural organizations are required to comply.

“Failure to adhere to these guidelines will prompt appropriate action from Hisbah Command,” the statement warned.

When contacted, Hisbah Commander Muhammad Muhammad Bununu confirmed the authenticity of the guidelines, stating, “Yes, it is from us. We issued it.”

The move has sparked mixed reactions, with some residents supporting the effort to curb moral decay, while others view it as an overreach into personal and cultural freedoms.

As Bauchi enforces these rules, the Hisbah Command’s actions signal a broader push to regulate social behavior in the state, raising questions about enforcement and community response. Updates will follow as the situation evolves.
