Gov Bago Declares Self DG of Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign, Names State as HQ

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has proclaimed himself the self-appointed Director General of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign for the 2027 general elections, designating Niger State as the campaign headquarters for “Asiwaju 2027.”

Bago made the bold declaration on Tuesday during an address in Minna, the state capital, signaling strong support for Tinubu’s continued leadership within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to party stakeholders and supporters, Bago emphasized his commitment to mobilizing resources and grassroots support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“I’m now the self-imposed Director General of the Tinubu campaign for 2027, and Niger State is the campaign headquarters for Asiwaju 2027,” he stated, underscoring his intention to lead the charge in ensuring the APC retains the presidency.

The governor’s announcement comes amidst his recent endorsement by the Niger APC Caucus for a second term, reflecting his growing influence within the party.

Bago’s declaration follows his administration’s focus on transformative projects under the “New Niger Agenda,” which includes infrastructure development, agricultural modernization, and education reforms.

However, the move has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his loyalty to the APC and others questioning the timing, given ongoing economic challenges and public discontent.

The governor’s statement also coincides with his recent controversial remarks against Badeggi FM Radio, prompting a lawsuit from the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) over alleged threats to media freedom.

Despite this, Bago remains a key figure in the APC, with supporters citing his developmental strides as evidence of his leadership capacity.
