The Federal Government would be appointing Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocols following a controversial incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 5, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, on Wednesday, as part of resolutions addressing recent cases of unruly behavior at Nigerian airports.
The decision comes after KWAM 1’s altercation with ValueJet Airlines staff and aviation security personnel, where he was accused of breaching boarding protocols by attempting to carry an unidentified liquid, initially reported as alcohol, onto a flight.
The incident, which sparked public debate, led to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) initially imposing a six-month no-fly ban on the musician and filing a criminal complaint with the police.
However, following KWAM 1’s public apology and expressions of remorse, the NCAA has reduced the flight ban to one month and withdrawn its complaint.
In a statement, Keyamo explained that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will collaborate with KWAM 1 to promote awareness of acceptable behavior in the aviation sector.
“Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA will withdraw its criminal complaint against KWAM 1. FAAN will also work with the music star to engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward,” Keyamo said.
KWAM 1, in a personally signed statement issued on August 8, 2025, apologized for the incident, clarifying that the flask in question contained water for medical reasons due to chronic dehydration, not alcohol as alleged. He emphasized that he did not intend to disrupt operations or violate aviation protocols and urged the public to rely on facts rather than sensationalized reports.
The appointment of KWAM 1 as an aviation security ambassador aims to leverage his public influence to promote compliance with airport regulations, signaling a reconciliatory approach while reinforcing the importance of safety in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
