The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to arraign five suspects—Idris Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar—for their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022, bombing of Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The attack, which occurred during a Sunday Mass, claimed over 40 lives and left scores injured, shocking the nation and drawing widespread condemnation.
The suspects will face trial before Justice Obiorah Egwatu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the arraignment scheduled for Monday, August 11, 2025.
The Federal Government has filed nine counts of terrorism-related charges against the defendants, as confirmed by a statement from the Nigerian Defence Headquarters.
The National Security Council previously linked the attack to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), with the then Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, announcing the arrest of the perpetrators in August 2022.
The arrests of Al-Qasim Idris and Abdulhaleem Idris were made on August 9, 2022, in Omialafara, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, during a joint operation by the military, Department of State Services (DSS), and police.
The arraignment, coming three years after the tragic incident, marks a significant step toward justice for the victims and their families.
The attack had sparked outrage, with over 30 worshippers initially reported dead, though later estimates confirmed a higher toll.
The trial is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the heinous act, as the government seeks to hold those responsible accountable.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as the judicial process unfolds, emphasizing their commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of Nigerians.
