The Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, has disclosed that the Federal Government needs ₦3 trillion to complete road projects initiated under the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) tax credit scheme.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, Umahi outlined the funding challenges facing the critical infrastructure projects.
Umahi revealed that the NNPCL had discontinued its financial support for the scheme effective August 1, 2025, prompting President Bola Tinubu to direct the ministry to explore alternative funding mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted progress.
“Our President is a man with a large heart,” Umahi stated. “Despite the funding stoppage by NNPCL, Mr. President, as Chairman of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), has instructed us to put in place alternative funding mechanisms to ensure the completion of all projects.”
The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to sustaining the momentum of the road projects, which are vital for improving connectivity and economic development across Nigeria.
He assured stakeholders that the ministry is actively working on innovative financing options to bridge the ₦3 trillion funding gap, underscoring President Tinubu’s resolve to deliver on infrastructure promises despite fiscal constraints.
