Falana Slams Proposed Pay Rise for Politicians as Insensitive

Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has strongly condemned the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC)'s proposal to increase salaries for political office holders, describing it as "insensitive" given the severe economic challenges facing ordinary Nigerians.

In an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily programme on Tuesday, Falana highlighted the stark contrast between the proposed pay rise and the dire living conditions of the majority of the population.

He pointed to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which indicates that over 133 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor, grappling with issues such as food insecurity, lack of access to education, healthcare, and basic amenities.

"I want to believe that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has not taken cognisance of the living standards in the country, particularly the harrowing experience of ordinary people," Falana stated.

He further emphasized, "Majority of our people are suffering. Going by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), we have more than 133 million people that are multidimensionally poor."

Falana argued that such a proposal from a government agency like the RMAFC demonstrates a profound disconnect from the realities on the ground.

"It is insensitive therefore for any agency of government, particularly RMAFC, to suggest an upward review of the emoluments of public officers," he added, urging a reconsideration in light of the ongoing economic downturn exacerbated by inflation, rising fuel prices, and currency devaluation.

The RMAFC's recommendation comes at a time when Nigeria is navigating one of its most challenging economic periods in recent history, with widespread calls for fiscal prudence and equitable resource allocation.

Critics, including civil society organizations, have echoed Falana's sentiments, arguing that prioritizing politicians' salaries over investments in social welfare could further erode public trust in governance.

As of now, the federal government has not issued an official response to the proposal or Falana's critique.
