Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and erstwhile National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has passed away at the age of 78.
The Ogbeh family confirmed his death in a statement released on Saturday, describing the elder statesman as a man of integrity who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political and agricultural landscape.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away peacefully on the 9th of August 2025 at the fulfilled age of 78,” the family stated.
Born on July 28, 1947, in Otukpo, Benue State, Ogbeh was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, known for his principled stance and contributions to public service.
A farmer, playwright, and politician of Idoma descent, he served as Minister of Agriculture from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari, where he championed agricultural reforms, including the promotion of local produce like purple hibiscus (zobo leaves), which earned Nigeria $31 million in export revenue in a single year.
He also served as Minister of Communications and later Minister of Steel Development in the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari from 1982 to 1983, before the military coup led by Major-General Buhari ended his tenure.
The news of Ogbeh’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Nigeria. Political leaders, colleagues, and citizens have taken to social media to mourn the loss of a statesman known for his candor and dedication.
His family described his passing as peaceful, noting that he left behind a legacy of service, five children, and a grieving nation. Details of his funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
