Ex-ACF Leader Urges Jonathan to Reject 2027 Presidential Bid

Elder Anthony Sani, former scribe and chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to dismiss calls to contest the 2027 presidential election.

In a Facebook post on August 10, 2025, Sani acknowledged Jonathan’s significant name recognition and respected legacy but questioned whether such a candidacy would serve the South’s best interests.

Expressing concern over growing political speculation, Sani highlighted murmurs positioning Jonathan as a potential contender for the 2027 presidency, urging him to prioritize regional and national considerations over political pressures.

“Dragging Jonathan into the race risks several political and strategic challenges”, including zoning and equity concerns.

“The South already has a sitting president, so pushing another southern candidate in 2027 could deepen regional tensions and weaken the moral argument for fairness in rotation,” he said.

On the issue of legacy preservation, Elder Sani added, “Jonathan left office with dignity in 2015, earning global respect for his statesmanship, returning to a high-stakes, divisive contest could risk overshadowing that legacy”.

He also highlighted the generational shift, pointing out that “Nigeria is yearning for fresh faces, new energy, and innovative leadership ideas, recycling past leaders might dampen the push for generational renewal”.

On political unity, Sani argued, “For the South to remain influential, it must think strategically about succession and coalition-building, rather than split its strength in emotionally driven campaigns.”

“President Jonathan’s place in history is already secure. The wisest move might be to allow him to remain a respected elder statesman — guiding, advising, and mentoring — rather than returning to the political battlefield,” he concluded.
