Benue Assembly Suspends ex-Speaker Dajoh for plotting to impeach Gov. Alia

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, for three months over an alleged attempt to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Dajoh resigned as Speaker on Sunday. The suspension was initiated on Tuesday through a motion by Terna Shimawua, the lawmaker representing Kyan State Constituency, and seconded by James Umoru from Apa State Constituency.

Notably, Shimawua was among those suspended by Dajoh last Friday before his resignation.

The new Speaker, Alfred Berger, reduced Dajoh’s suspension from six to three months without a vote, diverging from standard procedure.

In a separate development, the Assembly reversed its earlier rejection of Timothy Yangien Ornguga as a commissioner nominee. Ornguga, a law lecturer at Benue State University, was initially rejected under Dajoh’s leadership.

On Tuesday, Speaker Berger, reading a letter from Governor Alia, announced the screening of five additional nominees, including Ornguga and James Dwem.

The governor noted that both had no criminal convictions despite prior petitions against them. The lawmakers, who previously opposed their confirmation, raised no objections as Berger confirmed the duo without a voice vote.

Additionally, the Assembly lifted suspensions on three political office holders previously sanctioned by the governor: Grace Adagba, Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board; Maxwell Ogiri, Otukpo Local Government Chairman; and Michael Uper, Secretary of the State Lottery Board.
