Amaechi’s 2027 Presidential Bid ‘Dead on Arrival,’ Says Wike

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike has declared the 2027 presidential ambition of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi as “dead on arrival,” asserting that Amaechi lacks the political clout to secure his party’s ticket.

In an interview on Channels Television monitored in Abuja on Tuesday night, Wike also alleged that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, is upset with President Bola Tinubu for not selecting him as vice president.

Wike recounted a visit from Lawal and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, shortly after Tinubu announced his running mate, suggesting Lawal’s frustration stemmed from unmet expectations.

“His anger was that he thought Mr President would have chosen him as the vice presidential candidate. Having not done that, heaven would have to let loose,” Wike stated.

Mocking Amaechi’s recent claim of knowing President Tinubu’s weaknesses and ability to defeat him, Wike highlighted Amaechi’s string of electoral losses.

“In 2014 and 2015, when he was governor, we defeated him. In 2019, as Minister and Buhari’s campaign Director General, we defeated him. Even in 2023, he supported another candidate and still lost. So how can he claim the capacity to win?” Wike questioned, emphasizing Amaechi’s inability to secure a victory even on a new party platform.

Wike also addressed former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, advising him to address his recent invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) rather than politicizing the issue.

“Must everybody reach Mr President? There are ministers and advisers who represent him,” Wike added, defending the government’s structure.
