2027: ADC Coalition Misleading Nigerians, I’ll Run With Peter Obi – Datti Baba-Ahmed

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has dismissed the opposition coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a deceptive effort to mislead Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 22, 2025, Baba-Ahmed criticized the coalition, which includes prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir el-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, for lacking the credibility to rescue Nigeria from underdevelopment.

“They are deceiving us,” Baba-Ahmed stated, expressing skepticism about the coalition’s ability to deliver meaningful change.

He reaffirmed his commitment to running alongside Peter Obi, the former LP presidential candidate, in the 2027 election, emphasizing his loyalty to Obi and the Labour Party.

“I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed expressed his willingness to serve as Obi’s running mate again, stating, “If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow, my love for Nigeria is undying, and I would appropriately associate with like-minded individuals to restore Nigeria.”

He clarified that while he remains open to supporting other like-minded candidates, Obi is his primary choice.

“The first one has not said anything. The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi until he decides not to,” he added.

The ADC coalition, which adopted the party as its platform on July 2, 2025, has been positioned as a “third force” to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The coalition appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim chairman and ex-Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.

However, Baba-Ahmed’s remarks highlight internal tensions, as he insisted Obi should remain with the Labour Party rather than fully joining the ADC.

Baba-Ahmed also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging that its next chairman should not be an “election-rigger,” a veiled jab at current INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

He argued that electoral integrity is crucial for Nigeria’s democratic future.

As political maneuvers intensify ahead of 2027, Baba-Ahmed’s comments have sparked reactions on the social media space, with some users questioning Obi’s alignment with the ADC coalition while others support his continued leadership within the Labour Party.
