"₦142 Billion for Bus Terminals: Another Evidence of Misplaced Priority" – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, has sharply criticized the Federal Government's decision to allocate ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, calling it a glaring example of misplaced priorities and poor leadership.

In a recent post on X, Obi highlighted the stark contrast between the hefty budget for bus terminals and the inadequate funding for critical sectors like healthcare.

He noted that the 2024 budget allocates less than ₦100 billion to all teaching hospitals, federal universities, and psychiatric centers combined, despite the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s health sector.

Obi referenced a World Health Organization report stating that over 20 million Nigerians are grappling with mental health issues, underscoring the urgent need for investment in healthcare infrastructure.

“The difference between the success and failure of development in any nation is how you prioritize your scarce resources,” Obi stated, describing the allocation as a “tragic irony” and evidence of the government’s lack of competence and focus.

He argued that prioritizing bus terminals over healthcare funding reflects a failure of governance.

Obi’s remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns about the government’s spending priorities in the face of pressing challenges in education and healthcare.

The Federal Government is yet to respond to the criticism.
