Zamfara court stops Bashar Aliyu, 8 others from parading as assembly members

A Zamfara State High Court has issued an interim order restraining Hon. Bashar Aliyu from parading himself as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, pending the determination of a substantive motion before it.

Justice Muhammad Gusau, who granted the order, also barred eight other individuals from presenting themselves as members of the Assembly or performing any legislative duties until the court rules on the motion.

The order followed a motion filed by the Zamfara State House of Assembly dated June 23, 2025.

In his ruling, Justice Gusau stated:
“That the 1st Respondent (Aliyu), by himself, his agents, employees, officials, or any other persons acting on his behalf, is hereby restrained in the interim from parading himself as the Speaker of the applicant or assuming the functions of the Speaker of the Applicant, pending the hearing and determination of Motion No. ZMS/GS/M.228/2025.”

The court further directed the 2nd to 9th respondents, their agents, and associates to desist from conducting any illegal sittings or passing resolutions aimed at appointing a new speaker.

“The application succeeds and is hereby granted as prayed,” Justice Gusau ruled.

The decision comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the Zamfara State House of Assembly and is expected to reduce political tension pending the court’s final decision.
