The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has explained why prominent opposition figures Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai have not yet formally joined the party despite their alignment with its coalition.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, July 20, 2025, ADC Interim National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi clarified that both leaders were granted time to complete ongoing electoral processes in their respective parties—Obi with the Labour Party (LP) and El-Rufai with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Abdullahi emphasized that the delay is due to pending by-elections and governorship candidate selections, stating, “They were given space to conclude these processes, but they remain fully committed to the ADC coalition.”
He noted that both Obi and El-Rufai are actively engaging with the party and will officially join once their commitments are fulfilled.
Addressing concerns about the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket, Abdullahi dismissed rumors of favoritism, asserting that the party will ensure a transparent and democratic process for selecting its candidate.
“We have no preferred aspirant. Everyone will have a fair chance,” he said, encouraging supporters to join the ADC to vote for their preferred candidates.
