Starting September 1, 2025, World Athletics will require all female athletes, including Nigeria’s world record-holding sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, to undergo a one-time genetic test to verify biological sex for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
The test, using a cheek swab or blood sample, will check for the SRY gene typically found on the Y chromosome.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe defended the policy, stating, “At the elite level, you must be biologically female to compete in the female category.
Biology cannot be overridden by gender.” Coe emphasized the rule’s role in ensuring fairness in women’s sports and thanked Member Federations for their support.
The regulation, developed by the Gender Diverse Athlete Working Group, unifies existing rules on transgender and DSD athletes into a single requirement for all female competitors.
Amusan, the 2022 world champion in the 100m hurdles, is currently preparing for the Nigerian Championships in Lagos (August 1–3) ahead of the Tokyo event starting September 13.
