In a compelling address on July 25, 2025, in Abuja, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi urged Nigerian politicians to shift their focus from political maneuvering to effective governance that addresses the nation’s pressing challenges.
Speaking at a policy dialogue organized by the Centre for Democracy and Development, Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s economic and social crises, including a 34.19% inflation rate and over 40% food inflation, demand urgent attention over partisan politicking.
Obi, who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside Atiku Abubakar to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, criticized the obsession with electioneering at the expense of delivering tangible results.
“Politicians are busy plotting for 2027 while Nigerians are struggling to afford basic meals,” he said, pointing to the aftermath of the #EndBadGovernance protests in August 2024 as evidence of public frustration with leadership failures.
He called for a renewed focus on policies to tackle unemployment, insecurity, and infrastructure decay, urging leaders to prioritize measurable outcomes over political rhetoric.
“Governance is about improving lives, not endless debates about who controls power,” Obi stated, advocating for transparent resource management and inclusive economic reforms.
Reflecting on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Obi acknowledged ongoing efforts but stressed that results must translate into relief for citizens.
He also cautioned against divisive ethnic politics, a subtle jab at criticisms of Tinubu’s appointments, which some allege favor the Yoruba Southwest.
Obi’s remarks resonate amid heightened political activity, including Tinubu’s recent meeting with the 1999 governors’ class and ongoing disputes over local government allocations, as seen in the Osun State lawsuit against the Federal Government.
