Peter Obi Visits El-Rufai in Abuja Amid Coalition Talks

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, visited former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai at his residence in Abuja, sparking speculation about political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which took place on Friday, hours after Obi’s engagement with former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, comes amid reports of both leaders’ involvement in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC).

While details of the closed-door discussion remain undisclosed, sources suggest it centered on strengthening the opposition’s strategy to unseat the APC in 2027.

El-Rufai, who recently joined the ADC after briefly aligning with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), is a key figure in the coalition alongside other heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Obi, however, has not officially defected from the Labour Party, though his active engagement with ADC leaders fuels speculation about his political future.

The visit follows Obi’s recent call for politicians to prioritize governance over politicking, made during a policy dialogue in Abuja, where he emphasized addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, including 34.19% inflation and over 40% food inflation.

However, tensions within the ADC coalition are evident, with reports of disagreements over Atiku’s insistence on securing the party’s presidential ticket, which El-Rufai opposes, advocating for a southern candidate until 2031.

Whether this visit signals a unified front or highlights coalition fractures remains to be seen
