The Nigerian Senate called on the Federal Government to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari by naming a national monument after him.
The resolution followed a motion presented by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during a solemn plenary session dedicated to the former president, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital.
In his motion, Bamidele expressed profound grief over Buhari’s passing, describing him as a patriot who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
“As I move this motion today, I am reminded of the transient nature of human life. However, our consolation is that our former President led a successful and fulfilled life, both as a gallant soldier and a democrat who served two uninterrupted terms as President,” Bamidele stated.
He highlighted Buhari’s political journey, noting his presidential bids in 2003 and 2007 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), in 2011 under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and his victories in 2015 and 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Senate commended President Bola Tinubu for organizing a befitting state funeral and declaring seven days of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast nationwide.
The upper chamber also observed a minute’s silence in Buhari’s honor.
Senator Abdul’aziz Yari (APC-Zamfara) described him as “incorruptible and God-fearing,” while Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP-Bayelsa) praised his rare distinction of serving as both military Head of State and democratically elected president.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, emphasized that Buhari’s absence would be felt for years, adding that the nation was grateful for his contributions, including legislative reforms like the Petroleum Industry Act and the Electoral Act.
The House of Representatives also paid tribute, with Speaker Abbas Tajudeen noting Buhari’s commitment to democratic principles and infrastructure development, such as the Second Niger Bridge and revitalized rail lines.
The call to immortalize Buhari reflects widespread sentiment, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also urging the government to enshrine his contributions in national consciousness.
Buhari’s body was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on July 15, 2025, following Islamic funeral prayers attended by dignitaries, including President Tinubu.
