President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted a closed-door meeting with governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja, hours before the party’s pivotal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 24.
The high-level gathering, held at the State House Conference Hall, was led by Imo State Governor and Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) Chairman, Senator Hope Uzodimma, and attended by 22 of the 24 APC governors, with Katsina and Akwa Ibom represented by their deputies.
The meeting, which began around 7:00 p.m., was described by party insiders as a strategic engagement to align leadership and solidify party cohesion ahead of the NEC session at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday in the State House Banquet Hall.
Governor Uzodimma, speaking to journalists afterward, noted that the governors formally condoled with President Tinubu over the recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari and discussed strategies to strengthen the APC at all levels.
“We are here to share ideas with Mr. President on how best to strengthen our party at the grassroots, local government, state, and national levels,” Uzodimma said.
The NEC meeting is expected to address critical party matters, including the selection of a new substantive National Chairman following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje in June.
Uzodimma emphasized ongoing consultations, stating, “It would be premature to speculate on the new chairman. The final decision will be made at the NEC meeting.”
The discussions also focused on aligning party policies with federal priorities, particularly in economic stability and security reforms, to ensure effective governance under the APC’s leadership.
Early arrivals included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, underscoring the meeting’s significance.
The outcome of these deliberations is expected to shape the APC’s direction as it navigates internal dynamics and prepares for future political challenges.
