Abuja is set to come alive this afternoon as Nigeria’s Super Falcons, fresh from their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph, arrive in the capital for a grand victory parade.
The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to line the streets and cheer the team as they process from Abuja City Gate through Eagle Square to the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially receive them.
The Super Falcons secured a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday, clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced that the team will touch down at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by noon today, kicking off a celebratory open-roof bus parade showcasing the coveted trophy.
The procession will wind through key areas, including Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, Wuse Market, Abuja City Gate, and Eagle Square, before culminating at the Presidential Villa.
President Tinubu, who congratulated the team via a video call on Sunday, expressed pride in their resilience and unity, stating, “You have lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy.”
He eagerly anticipates receiving the trophy and hosting the players and officials. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Player of the Tournament, thanked the President for approving their allowances and promised to present the trophy in Abuja.
The Federal Government has urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory and environs to join the celebration, highlighting the team’s achievement as a symbol of Nigerian excellence.
“This is a moment to celebrate our champions and showcase national pride,” an NFF spokesperson said, encouraging citizens to turn out in droves to catch a glimpse of the iconic WAFCON trophy.
The parade, expected to run from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, will offer a rare opportunity for fans to honor the Super Falcons, whose dominance in African women’s football continues to inspire millions.
Following the procession, President Tinubu will host the team at the Presidential Villa, marking a fitting tribute to their remarkable feat.
