PDP Holds NEC Meeting in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, kicked off its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at its national secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The three-day gathering, set to conclude on Friday, July 25, aims to tackle critical party matters, including internal reforms, zoning arrangements, and strategic planning for the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, announced by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, brings together a broad spectrum of party leadership as stipulated under Section 31(1) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

Attendees include Acting National Chairman Amb. Iliya Damagum, serving and former Presidents and Vice Presidents who are PDP members, members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), principal officers of the Senate and House of Representatives, up to 18 serving senators, 24 members of the House of Representatives, all PDP state governors, national officers, state chairmen, and six ex-officio members.

Former National Working Committee members and former PDP governors are also expected to participate.Key agenda items include reviewing the zoning committee’s reports on candidate distribution for states and offices, preparations for the party’s national convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025, and addressing internal rifts that have plagued the party.

The NEC is also expected to deliberate on recent security concerns, notably the assassination attempt on Jude Ezenwafor, the PDP’s Anambra governorship candidate, which occurred in Abuja the previous weekend. Discussions will focus on party consolidation following recent leadership disputes, particularly over the National Secretary position, where Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s reinstatement has been contentious.

The meeting follows a turbulent period for the PDP, marked by factional disputes and leadership crises.

In June 2025, the party’s 100th NEC meeting faced disruptions when armed police blocked access to the Wadata Plaza secretariat, preventing BoT members from holding their pre-NEC meeting.

The conflict stemmed from disagreements over the National Secretary role and attempts by some factions to postpone the NEC meeting, highlighting deep divisions within the party.

The current NEC meeting is seen as a critical opportunity to resolve these issues and project unity.

Ologunagba emphasized the PDP’s national reach, stating, “There is no community in Nigeria where you won’t find PDP members.

The PDP, with its rallying cry ‘Power to the People!’, aims for a united front as it navigates the current political landscape and prepares for future electoral contests.”

Political observers note that the success of this meeting could determine the PDP’s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, especially after the APC’s recent NEC meeting, where it confirmed its leadership and zoning arrangements.

As the PDP navigates these challenges, stakeholders are hopeful that the 101st NEC meeting will lay the groundwork for a revitalized party capable of addressing Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.

The outcomes of the deliberations are expected to shape the PDP’s trajectory in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
