Mark Esset, a member of the house of representatives from Akwa Ibom, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Esset’s defection notice was announced on the floor of the
lower legislative chamber by Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the house, who
presided over Tuesday’s plenary.
Esset, who represents Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan
federal constituency, attributed his defection to the alleged crisis rocking
the national leadership of the PDP.
He said his defection followed due consultations with his
constituents.
His defection leaves the PDP without any house of
representatives member from Akwa Ibom.
Early this month, six members of the PDP in the green
chamber defected to the APC.
The defections followed that of Umo Eno, governor of Akwa
Ibom, who switched from the PDP to the APC in June.
Ahead of the 2025 elections, the house of representatives
has witnessed several defections, largely from the opposition parties to the
APC.
