Kano Court Sentences Two Men to Six Months in Prison for Impersonating EFCC Operatives

A Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Nasiru Saminu, sentenced two men, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, to six months imprisonment each for impersonating operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The conviction, secured by the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate on Friday, followed their arraignment on a one-count charge of falsely representing themselves as EFCC investigators.

According to court documents, the duo was accused of using forged EFCC identity cards in May 2025 to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, an offense punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.

The charge stated, “That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, falsely impersonated investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, used a false identity card, and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. EFCC counsel Idris I. Haruna presented the case facts and urged the court to convict the defendants based on their plea.

Justice Saminu subsequently handed down the six-month prison sentence to each individual, emphasizing the need to deter such fraudulent activities that undermine the credibility of law enforcement agencies.

The EFCC has been actively cracking down on impersonation cases, as this incident follows other recent prosecutions in Kano.

For instance, earlier in 2025, the agency arraigned two other individuals for impersonating a prominent oil mogul, defrauding victims of N12 million.

The EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate continues to warn the public to be vigilant and verify the credentials of anyone claiming to represent the agency.

The EFCC’s committed to tackling fraud and maintaining public trust in its operations. The agency encourages citizens to report suspicious activities to its official channels, including its hotline and corporate headquarters in Abuja.
