The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu State, is currently the site of an ongoing protest by internship students, who are demanding the full payment of their entitled salaries and allowances.
The interns, comprising medical and allied health professionals such as nurses, have taken to the hospital premises to voice their grievances over what they describe as significant salary shortages.
According to reports, the interns are receiving approximately N162,000 instead of the expected N217,000, a shortfall that has persisted for months despite repeated complaints to the hospital management.
The protesters, including intern nurses who claim their salaries have been cut by up to 75%, are also highlighting unpaid allowances, accusing the hospital administration of failing to address their concerns.
"All we are asking for is the full payment for our services, not an increase," one intern stated, emphasizing that their demands are for fair compensation for work already performed.
Videos and images circulating online show the students gathered at the hospital, holding placards and chanting for immediate action from the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, and the management team.
This protest echoes past labor disputes at UNTH, such as the 2015 resident doctors’ strike over unpaid allowances, which led to significant disruptions in patient care.
The current situation has raised concerns about potential impacts on hospital operations, though no official statement from the hospital management has been reported as of now.
The interns remain steadfast, urging the hospital to address the salary discrepancies promptly.
The situation at UNTH continues to develop, with the public and healthcare community closely watching for a resolution.
