Edo Governor Defends Stance on Peter Obi, Says “So Be It If It’s a Crime” (VIDEO)

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ignited a firestorm of criticism after warning former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi not to visit the state without prior notification.

The remarks, made during a defection rally in Uromi on July 18, 2025, were part of a broader statement where Okpebholo alleged that Obi’s unannounced visit on July 7, during which he donated ₦15 million to St. Philomena School of Nursing in Benin City, coincided with unrest that led to three deaths.

The governor’s comments have drawn sharp rebuke from various quarters, including the Nigerian Bar Association, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, and the African Democratic Congress, who argue that the directive violates Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, guaranteeing freedom of movement.

In response to all of the criticism, Okpebholo has made a fresh statement during a political outing, he said:  “If telling Obi to notify me when coming to Edo is a crime, so be it.”

He went on ; "I don't regret what I said, In fact, I'm repeating it...before you step foot in Edo State, you must notify me. this is not a threat, it's a warning".

  1. When you respond to issues of sane people, it makes meaning. Responding to issues raised by illiterates, it is seriously unsustainable.
