Renowned Nigerian socio-political activist, Aisha Yesufu has confirmed her involvement in the grand coalition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a political platform aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
However, Yesufu clarified that she is not yet a full member of the ADC, stating she will publicly announce her official membership when the time comes.
Yesufu, a prominent figure known for her roles in the #BringBackOurGirls and #EndSARS movements, made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
“I am part of the grand coalition of the ADC, but I am not yet a member of the ADC. I will make it known once I'm a full member,” she said, addressing speculations about her political alignment.
The ADC coalition, unveiled on July 2, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, has attracted notable opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The coalition aims to unite opposition forces to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027. Yesufu’s involvement has sparked interest due to her vocal advocacy for youth and women’s inclusion in political leadership and her significant influence among Nigeria’s younger demographics.
Yesufu has been outspoken about the coalition’s need to prioritize inclusivity, criticizing its initial leadership structure for being dominated by older men.
In a post on X, she urged the ADC to ensure women and youths are actively involved in decision-making roles, beyond tokenistic positions like “Women Leader” or “Youth Leader.”
“You see this table full of older generation men, cannot be the only ones allowed to make the decision as we go on! Women and youth must be in the midst of decision-making and not as afterthoughts,” she wrote.
She has also clarified that Peter Obi, a key figure in the coalition, remains a member of the Labour Party, dispelling rumors of his defection to the ADC.
“Peter Obi has not left Labour Party. ADC is the party chosen for the 2027 election,” she stated, emphasizing Obi’s continued commitment to Labour Party campaigns in upcoming elections.
As the ADC coalition gains momentum, Yesufu’s role as a vocal advocate for inclusivity and her ability to mobilize grassroots support could prove pivotal.
Her decision to delay full membership underscores her commitment to ensuring the coalition aligns with her vision for a more representative and accountable political structure. Nigerians await her next move as the 2027 elections draw closer.
