The Nigerian House of Representatives has commenced its annual recess, adjourning plenary sessions for a two-month break, with lawmakers set to resume on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
The decision was announced by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during the closing session on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The recess, a customary practice aligned with the National Assembly’s legislative calendar, allows lawmakers to engage in constituency activities, oversight functions, and personal engagements during the break.
Speaker Abbas urged members to utilize the period to connect with their constituents, address local concerns, and monitor ongoing federal projects in their respective constituencies.
“This recess is not a vacation but an opportunity to strengthen our bond with the people we serve and ensure effective representation,” Abbas stated.
The House’s adjournment follows a productive session marked by significant legislative activities, including the approval of a $347 million loan for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and a telecom access project, as well as tributes to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, the period leading up to the recess was not without controversy, with debates over defections and national security issues dominating discussions.
During the recess, standing committees are expected to continue oversight work, ensuring that federal agencies adhere to budgetary and policy guidelines.
The Senate, which also adjourned on July 23, 2025, is similarly scheduled to reconvene on September 23, aligning both chambers for the next legislative session.
The break comes at a critical time as Nigeria grapples with economic challenges and security concerns, with lawmakers expected to return with renewed focus on addressing these issues.
