El-Rufai: Opposition Coalition to Register New Party as ADC Backup

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai has announced that a coalition of opposition parties plans to register a new party as a backup for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This move aims to counter potential threats from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which El-Rufai claims is trying to undermine opposition parties.

"Those who refuse to join the APC face threats of investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), or Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB),” he alleged.

El-Rufai expressed concerns that the APC might infiltrate the ADC, causing a crisis within the party. To mitigate this risk, the coalition is considering registering a new party as an alternative. El-Rufai accused the APC-led federal government of employing tactics to weaken opposition parties, including luring members with promises of appointments, money, or automatic tickets in the 2027 elections.

“The opposition parties’ alliance in the ADC is temporary, and we may register a new party as a second option, which we will move to should the ADC be instigated into crisis by the government,” he said.

El-Rufai claimed that the APC government is sponsoring crises in opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to weaken them. He warned that the APC might try to incite old ADC members to disown new entrants, sabotaging the opposition alliance.

The coalition's decision to register a new party as a backup for the ADC reflects their determination to strengthen their position and challenge the APC in the 2027 elections.
