Controversy in Peru: President Boluarte Doubles Salary Amid Crisis

Peru's highly unpopular President Dina Boluarte, has doubled her salary to $10,000 per month, despite facing widespread protests and criticism over her handling of gang violence in the country.

The government announced the move on Wednesday, July 2, after previously denying reports of a potential pay raise in May.

Boluarte's monthly salary has been increased to approximately $10,000, making her salary higher than most of her Latin American counterparts. Economy Minister Raul Perez-Reyes explained that the adjustment was based on a comparison with the salaries of heads of state from 12 Latin American countries, moving Peru's president from 11th to a higher rank, surpassing most countries except for a few.

Boluarte's approval rating is hovering around 2%, making this announcement highly unpopular among Peruvians.

Izquierdo criticized the timing, saying, "This is the worst time to announce this news, given her approval ratings are close to zero."

Former Economy Minister, Luis Miguel Castilla believes the measure reinforces the impression of frivolity surrounding the president.

Boluarte has faced protests since taking office in December 2022, driven by various scandals, investigations, and a surge in gang violence. She is currently facing a dozen probes, including one related to undeclared luxury gifts, known as "Rolexgate."

The salary increase has sparked widespread criticism, with 94% of Peruvians opposing the move, reflecting Boluarte's deep unpopularity.
