Army and DSS-Backed Hybrid Forces K!ll 45 Bandits in Niger State

In a significant operation against banditry, Nigerian Army troops, supported by hybrid forces and intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS), neutralized at least 45 bandits in Iburu village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, on Friday evening, July 25, 2025.

The joint operation targeted a large group of bandits advancing on motorcycles to attack Iburu and neighboring communities, following critical intelligence intercepted by the DSS.

According to security sources, the DSS alerted standby soldiers after detecting the bandits’ movements, leading to a fierce gunfight that lasted several hours.

Villagers reported counting at least 40 bodies believed to be those of the bandits, with dozens of their motorcycles destroyed during the clash.

Tragically, two members of the hybrid forces fighting alongside the soldiers lost their lives, while four others sustained serious gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at a public hospital in Minna, the state capital.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts to secure Niger State, particularly the volatile Shiroro-Munya axis, a known stronghold for bandit groups.

Earlier this year, the Nigeria Customs Service reported heightened terrorist activity near the Babanna border in Niger State, underscoring the region’s security challenges.

The Nigerian Army and DSS have not officially commented on the incident, but sources indicate this operation reflects a strategic shift toward pre-emptive strikes based on early intelligence gathering.

The sustained offensive is seen as a blow to bandit networks in the region, though security analysts warn that the cooperation between bandits and other criminal elements in Nigeria’s northwest and north-central zones remains a pressing challenge.
