On July 16, 2025, at approximately 9:00 pm, a devastating incident occurred in Durumi 2, Abuja, where a 3-year-old boy drowned after falling into an uncovered septic tank filled with feces in a residential compound.
Police operatives from the Durumi Divisional Headquarters have arrested Philip Jallo, a male resident of the area, for alleged negligence, as neighbors had repeatedly urged him to cover the hazardous tank.
FCT Police Command spokesperson, CSP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest, stating that preliminary investigations revealed the uncovered septic tank had been a persistent danger to the community.
Despite multiple warnings from concerned neighbors, the suspect failed to act.
“The innocent child was playing in the compound when he tragically slipped and fell into the uncovered soak away. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital after being rescued,” Adeh said.
The suspect is currently in custody. The FCT Commissioner of Police expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
He urged residents to prioritize environmental safety and called on parents and guardians to closely supervise their children to prevent such tragedies.
