The Vatican has announced the appointment of Joseph Lin Yuntuan as auxiliary bishop of Fuzhou, a significant move that signals the new Pope Leo XIV's support for a contentious agreement with China on bishop nominations.
The Vatican announced on Wednesday the first appointment of a Chinese bishop under Leo XIV, signalling the new pope’s support for a controversial accord on nominations struck by his predecessor with Beijing.
“This event represents further fruit of the dialogue between the Holy See and the Chinese authorities and is an important step in the communal journey of the diocese,” it said in a statement.
The agreement between the Vatican and China's Communist leadership, first struck in 2018 and renewed in October 2022 for four more years, allows both sides to have a say in the nomination of bishops in China, where there are around 12 million Catholics.
Despite criticism from some within the Church, Pope Francis had sought to make inroads for the Church in China through this deal.
The lack of formal diplomatic relations between the Holy See and China, due to the Vatican's recognition of Taiwan, has not hindered the Vatican's efforts to engage with China on matters of mutual interest.
The appointment of Bishop Lin Yuntuan is seen as a positive step in the Vatican's relations with China under the new pope.
