Senator Imaseun Dumps Labour Party, Defects to APC

Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South in the Nigerian Senate, has formally announced his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Imaseun’s defection letter during plenary on Wednesday, June 25.

“I write to respectfully notify the distinguished Senate through the office of the Senate President of my resignation from the Labour Party and my decision to officially join the All Progressives Congress,” the letter read in part.

Imaseun, elected under the Labour Party in 2023, said his decision followed extensive consultations with constituents and political stakeholders across Edo South Senatorial District.

He attributed his defection to what he described as “irreconcilable internal crises and leadership challenges” within the Labour Party, which he claimed had undermined his ability to represent his constituents effectively.

"My supporters have expressed a strong desire for me to join a party that offers national prominence and political relevance,” he said.

The senator also highlighted his intent to support the “renewable agenda” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“I remain fully committed to the service of my constituents and to the democratic ideals of this Senate,” he concluded.

The defection marks another loss for the Labour Party, which has struggled to retain key lawmakers amid internal wrangling and declining cohesion since the 2023 general elections.
