The Russian government has announced a significant initiative to provide 500,000 scholarships to international students, including Nigerians, in a bid to strengthen global educational ties.
The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podelyshev, revealed this development during a media briefing in Abuja, highlighting Russia’s renewed strategy to boost educational and diplomatic relations with Africa.
The scholarship program, backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, aims to increase the number of international students in Russia.
He noted that currently, about 32,000 African students are enrolled in Russian universities, with only around 2,000 from Nigeria.
Podelyshev further explained that the Russian government had already provided no less than 220 scholarships to Nigerian students for the 2025 academic year, covering tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs.
“The initiative is part of a broader policy to expand access to higher education for African students across various fields in Russian universities,” he said.
He also narrated that Russia is keen to integrate education with large-scale bilateral economic ventures, particularly in critical sectors such as nuclear energy and industrial development.
The ambassador emphasised that the scholarship program would help foster long-term cooperation between Russia and Nigeria.
He added that to ensure the success of the program, Russia plans to establish a strategic framework to encourage students to return to their home countries after completing their studies.
Explaining further, the Russian Ambassador said that by training students for specific national projects, Russia believes that students will have stronger incentives to return and contribute to their country’s growth.
