Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the national vice-chairman (south-east) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says governors of Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Kano will join the ruling party in the next two months.
Speaking in an interview with Punch newspaper, Arodiogbu
said the planned defections are not speculative but imminent.
The national vice-chairman said APC is also not ruling out
the possibility of Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu; and his Abia counterpart, Alex
Otti; pitching tent with the party.
“We are talking about governors from Bayelsa, Rivers,
Plateau, Kano, either Abia or Enugu. In the next two months, you will see them
join us officially,” he said.
“Of course, Bayelsa is in the picture — that’s why I
mentioned it. On Adeleke (Osun governor), I can’t give a definitive answer, but
I know he has made moves.”
Arodiogbu said opposition politicians who are mobilising for
a coalition ahead of the 2027 election are only interested in “media stunt” and
not governance.
“This idea of forming a so-called opposition coalition is
nothing but a media stunt,” he said.
“These politicians just want to keep their names in the
headlines. But Nigerians are aligning with a party that is delivering — and
that is the APC.”
Arodiogbu dismissed rumours that the presidency has struck a
deal with Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, to guarantee his victory in the
November 2025 governorship election.
He added that the president had directed the party’s leader
to ensure that Nicholas Ukachukwu, APC governorship candidate in Anambra, wins
the election.
Arodiogbu said Soludo is no longer as popular in Anambra and
that the governor is trying to win his re-election by seeking endorsements.
“There is no arrangement to back Soludo. President Tinubu
has not endorsed him. In fact, after he visited Anambra to inaugurate the Emeka
Anyaoku Centre, we presented our candidate Ukachukwu, to the president. He told
us to go and win the state,” he added.
“Soludo is no longer popular. He has spent two years in
public fights with traditional rulers, church leaders, and market unions.
“Now, he’s scrambling for endorsements from the same people
he antagonised.”
Recently, two governors elected on the platform of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno
of Akwa Ibom — joined the
APC.
Opposition parties are currently battling wave of defections
to the ruling party — a development that has sparked conversations on whether
the country is turning into a one-party state.
