Oyo Governor Calls for Single Term for Elected Officials

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has proposed a constitutional amendment to introduce a single term of five or six years for elected public officials in Nigeria.

Makinde made the call at his residence in Ibadan while receiving a delegation of Muslim faithful after Eid-el-Kabir prayers.

Governor Makinde argued that the current two-term system is riddled with distractions that hinder effective governance, citing the pressures of re-election campaigns and political speculation.

He believes that a single term would allow leaders to focus fully on delivering their mandates without distractions.

Makinde's proposal is based on his own experience as governor, having spent six years in office and facing challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and re-election campaigns.

Makinde urged Nigerians to begin a serious national conversation about amending the constitution to introduce a single term for elected officials.

His comments align with similar calls made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who proposed a six-year single term for the presidency.

However, the House of Representatives voted against a similar bill in November 2024.

A single term could lead to more effective governance, as leaders would focus on delivering their mandates without worrying about re-election.

The proposal could reduce political distractions and allow leaders to prioritize the needs of their constituents.
