Niger State Governor Grants State Pardon to 11 Death Row Convicts



Niger State - Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, has granted an unconditional pardon to 11 individuals who were sentenced to death for their involvement in a violent communal clash between the Gaba and Anfani communities in Lavun Local Government Area.

The pardon was announced by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nasiru Muhammad Muazu, during a press briefing at the Government House in Minna. According to Muazu, the governor exercised his prerogative of mercy under Section 212(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The convicts, who were sentenced to death by hanging on February 8, 2022, were found guilty of culpable homicide stemming from the deadly 2018 clash that resulted in multiple deaths and widespread property damage.

1. Mohammed Mohammed

2. Ndana Alhaji Sheshi

3. Isah Baba Madu

4. Mohammed Mohammed Nda Bida

5. Abubakar Baba Salihu

6. Baba Mohammed Shaba

7. Adamu Mohammed Baba

8. Haruna Mohammed

9. Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa

10. Ibrahim Mohammed

11. Mohammed Isah

According to Muazu, the governor's decision aims to foster unity, healing, and lasting peace between the two communities. The state government has also committed to supporting long-term peace initiatives in the area.
