2023: 10-man ECOWAS delegation visits Nigeria

A 10-man Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) delegation on a pre-election fact-finding mission in Nigeria says the country’s politicians should embrace dialogue towards having a peaceful 2023 election.

The delegation warned politicians against making next year’s polls a deadly battle.

Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the leader of the delegation and former president of the Ghana Electoral Commission, made the observation when he visited Yabagi Sani, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He stated, “We’ll really like to urge the political parties to stop talking at each other and being abusive, but start talking to each other. You’re not having a battle.”

He enjoined Nigerians to desist from vote buying and selling during next year’s elections in the country.

Yabagi Sani, while responding, attributed the inability of committed and patriotic leadership to the present woes in the country.

He noted that some of the things that are happening in the country are not good for the peace of mind, especially the issues of violence and use of money in the electoral process.

According to him, the delegation’s visit is timely, saying that if this kind of visits are not taking place, perhaps such things will keep happening with greater impunity.
