EPL: Why I benched Ndidi – Leicester boss, Rodgers

Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers has shed more light on his decision to keep Wilfred Ndidi on the substitute bench in Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ndidi, who has been a regular starter for the Foxes was surprisingly named among the substitutes in the game.

Instead, Rodgers preferred Frenchman Boubacar Soumare to the Nigeria midfielder.

Ndidi took the place of Belgian Youri Tielemans late in the game.

Leicester City lost 2-1 despite Chelsea playing with 10-men for the majority of the game.

“We wanted to come through the pitch quicker. Soumare has been great in training and he’s committed now to staying at the club, which is great,” Rodgers told BBC Sports Leicester.

“He (Soumare) allows us to play through the thirds quickly and that was the reason for him coming in instead.”

Leicester City are still without a win in the Premier League this season.
