Buhari, Talon discuss Nigeria-Benin relations

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday hosted President Patrice Talon of the Republic of Benin at the State House.

The Nigeria leader reiterated the importance of good neighbourliness.

“The survival of your neighbour is also your own, and we will continue to work with our neighbours in the light of this understanding,” he said.

Buhari recalled that on the assumption of office in 2015, one of his first steps was to visit neighbouring countries – Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin.

The President said the move was to forge a common understanding on crucial issues, including security, trade and development.

“And those are issues we must continue to engage in, for the good of our countries and the people. Whatever irritations that come up must be removed,” Buhari advised.

In his remarks, Talon noted that the challenges of 2020 were huge and remain in 2021.

“Our relationship as neighbours must, therefore, remain cordial”, he told Buhari.
