HKN artiste Mayorkun opens up on how Davido signed him

Fast and rising singer Mayowa Adewale popularly known as Mayorkun was recently interviewed. The Eleko singer spoke on his leaving his banking job to sing on Davido’s label Davido Music Worldwide.

He also spoke on the rapid success his first single Eleko recorded and the beef in Davido’s music family over his success. Mayorkun has an actress mother and an actor cum singer father.

Excerpt.

For how long have you been singing?
I was doing music by the way. I knew I had to study and that if I should focus on music my attention will be diverted. After my graduation I gave music more time. After my service year I worked in a bank before embracing music fully.

How did you meet Davido?
My salary in the bank was so poor so I decided to get another job. Meanwhile, I have recorded a song using my cousin’s piano in late December, 2015 and I shared it on social media late January 2016 and Davido saw it on February 1. Then he followed me and sent me a direct message via Twitter. He later followed me on Instagram and asked if I can do more than playing the keyboard. I then sent him some of the songs I have done. He picked on one that I recorded while still in school and told me ‘guy I am signing you on’.

Should I say yours is another Cinderella story like that of Olajumoke the bread-seller?
I don’t know o, I went somewhere and someone else told me that me and Olajumoke have a similar story. For me it’s God that made everything happen so quick and fast. I didn’t plan it; I don’t know anybody close to Davido. I know him as an artist and was a fan and still is.

Did you abandon your work as a banker because Davido signed you on?
That was very coincidental, the day I put in my resignation letter was the day I got a call from Davido that I have to relocate to Lekki for my contract with his music label. Even before I resigned I had plan to go look for another banking job.

In 10 days your first single hit one million views on Youtube and this generated a little bit of controversy as many believed your management bought those views?
If we bought views those who are IT compliant will know. We did not; it is just God at work. If we bought views you will get to know in the comment session. Your parents are both entertainers, your mum is a popular actress, your dad is an actor and movie director.

How did you get into music?
Funny enough people don’t know that my mum sings, not for commercial purpose but my dad sings for money. My uncle is popular veteran juju musician Segun Adewale.

What were your parents’ reactions when you told them you were leaving the banking industry for music?
My dad was very understanding but my mum will not hear of it. She was skeptical about me leaving banking job for music. She had told severally that I should pursue my banking career but she changed her mind when Davido called me himself. She was there when Davido called me and she said wow this is big maybe you should give it a trial.

How did you come about your stage name Mayorkun?
I have had like 10 different names but this one came to be in my 300 level in the university. We were watching a Japanese animation and I noticed they called a boy there Kun. I later got to know Kun means a boy. My name is Mayowa but most people call me Mayor so I added the Kun to it. Few days after you released Eleko, you shot another video.

When should your fans be expecting this out?
I don’t know yet, what I know is that my next 20 singles are ready. My fans should expect more music and more music. I won’t like to drop the new one yet, let Eleko continue to rule the airwaves.

What was the inspiration for Eleko?
I once asked a girl out and she turned me down and I asked her why she said I don’t have money to take care of her. I wrote that song a year after the incident and today it’s a hit

Music comes with a lot of challenges.
With fame come money, drugs, women and then baba mama? No, it’s zero for baby mama. I am managing my affairs well. I have to zip up. My mom is not ready for a grandchild now. First drugs, I don’t do drugs and I won’t advice anybody to do drugs. I have seen the damages drug has done to people’s lives so I won’t advice anybody to embrace it. As an artist you can’t do without women. I keep my relationship with women on fan-artist level. I don’t take advantage of them. Alcohol, I drink but I don’t drink to get drunk.

There was this controversial tweet by Davido about his own blood hating him over you. How did that get to you?
Davido wasn’t in the country when he tweeted about that. I was in my house when somebody called and asked who I was fighting with and I told him I was not fighting with anybody. He then told me to check my Snapchat and Twitter handle and I saw the whole drama. At the end of the day when I got to Lekki, I saw everybody; I met love among us all. From my side I said there is no beef but one love. B-red is fine we are all one big family.
