Nigeria's first lady, Patience Jonathan denies asking Governor Amaechi for money

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Sunday denied a statement credited to Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State that she asked him to share the state funds with her.

Amaechi had while speaking in Port Harcourt at the joint graduation of the students of University of Ibadan and pioneer graduates of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, on Saturday quoted as saying that his problem with Mrs. Jonathan started after he rejected her demand.

“I refused to give them money in Abuja because if I do that, I won’t be able to carry out any development project or finish the road from Rumuolumeni to Rumuepirikom.

“The quarrel between me and the wife of the President is because she said I should bring your money, Rivers people’s money and share with her,” the governor reportedly said.

But Mrs. Jonathan, in a statement by her media assistant, Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, said Amaechi’s statement was a deliberate attempt to malign her and score cheap political point.

She further described the governor’s statement as a lie designed to denigrate her person and rubbish the Presidency.

She said she could not have made such a request from the governor either directly or indirectly.

The statement read, “Having waited patiently for Governor Amaechi to refute the statement credited to him about the First Lady, (with the assumption that he was misquoted), it has become clear that it was a deliberate attempt to malign Dame Patience Jonathan and score cheap political point.

“The Governor may have been beclouded by the political uncertainty surrounding him to make such a jaundiced and unsubstantiated allegation that the First Lady asked him to bring Rivers State money to share.

“This is a blatant lie designed to denigrate the person of Dame Patience Jonathan and rubbish the Presidency. This is to say the least most unfortunate.

“It is crystal clear that Governor Amaechi is looking for cheap excuse for his failure in the governance of the state. We say without any iota of equivocation that the First Lady never made such request and could not have done so in any way either directly and indirectly.

  4. @1:07am Ameachi will be disciplined by whom? It is the ignorance of people like you that perpetuates incompetent people in political office. If what Ameachi said is untrue, sue him for scandal. That is why we have courts! Why make empty threats?

  5. We appear to be heading towards childish politics that could not have taken place prior independence. + 50 years after, one is wondering the level of maturity amongst our so called politicians, it sounds more like a folk time tales of moonlight, where kids exchange words like- you stole my ball, i will pour sand on you, your mother is a bastard Any 1st first lady from this part of the world does not need to beg a serving governor for money, she has a big pool to draw from, if she so wishes.Politicians stop under estimating the mental status of the electorates, discuss issues , roll out your manifestos or catalogues your achievements.

  6. Amaechi is a sinking man looking for who he can drown with. This lies nor go hold water to any intelligent man. If this was true I'm sure Amaechi would have told the world long ago. Most especially since he is looking for means to rubbish the Presidency just because he is desperate to becoming the Vice President come 2015. The truth is there is no vacancy in Aso Rock for APC & their bunch of crooks!

  7. Assuming the story is true, do governors dip their hands into the state coffers and give out money as they wish? How could Dame Patience Jonathan blatantly ask a sitting governor for money. It seems Mr. Amaechi spends money as he wishes without regards to due process.

Who chose this immature nonentity to be governor? Come and see what your boy is doing. He's like a bull in a China shop. He lacks decorum, finesse and political astuteness. He is a poor judge of character if he truly believed someone would believe his fantasy.

Wike put up posters to signify his intention to contest gubernatorial elections. Amaechi starts quarreling with the posters. Why not encourage anyone who thinks he can do better to join the fray? Why he frightened?

  8. Lousy politician have nothing good to offer Nigerian .They should roll out meaningful Manifesto and tell Nigerian what plans they have inplace to change the positive transformation agenda of GEJ which Nigerians are currently enjoying. Not by accusing the First Lady on what has not happen -cheap blackmails have been what APC is using against Mr President and PDP but have not roll out their plans to convince Nigerians only to photocopy PDP agenda. They should stop heating the polity cos we are watching them.
