The Nigerian Medial Association, NMA, yesterday suspended its 51 days old protracted strike.
The NMA through its official twitter handle @nmanigeria announced the suspension of the seven weeks strike.
The strike was suspended midnight yesterday after an Emergency Delegates Meeting in Abuja.
They also agreed that all doctors suspended will be resuming duties and no one will be victimised in whatever form as a result of participation in the strike.
The strike was suspended following the voting of members.
Out of 265 total vote cast, 199 voted for suspension, 96 voted against.
Confirming the suspension of the strike, the Public Relation Officer of the Lagos State branch of NMA, Dr. Peters Ogunbiyi who spoke to a source in a telephone chat said the association decided to listen to the voice of reason.
His words: “President Jonathan has promised to meet all our demands through the Senate President. Specifically, he promised to suspend the circular on the suspension of Residency Training in the country.
We also considered the fact that we have new cases of Ebola from secondary contacts. So we decided to suspend the strike to save Nigerians from unnecessary deaths.”
It could be recalled that the Federal Government recently sacked 16,000 resident doctors across the country and suspended the residency training.

Bros no mind them. They had to hold their usual nocturnal meeting to call the baseless strike off because they have seen that they are not as important as they had thought.After all,many go to private hospitals because of the poor attitude of most doctors in these public hospitals. They should not call it off again after all some states are already making plans to employ Egyptian Doctors.NMA has turned. the profession into a kabu kabu business. I looked at their demands and infact I was so surprised and disappointed that they could even put some laughable demands or items in the least as ground for the strike. Medical Doctors? It speaks volume about those manning our health institutions. Even secondary school students would have known that most of NMA demands are frivolous.We don't. need them again.Let them remain in their private hospitals as they have been doing.Government should not give them one kobo.Ci kena!

ReplyDeleteThe Government was just bluffing, there is no way they would have been able to replace 16000 doctors. Youth may be unemployed but none of them are doctors. A doctor can only be unemployed by choice! You really think there 16000 doctors out there waiting to take over? Unless the Government had plans of importing the said replacements which is doubtful. It is unfortunate that you think doctors were being greedy with their demands, what about our government officials who jump to Germany, UK, US and India for check ups and treatment for a common cold on tax payers money without a thought of the deplorable state of our Teaching hospital. ReplyDeleteCan those supporting suspension of striking doctors tell us where in the world, a right thinking leader will shame himself by taking such action?
And of a sudden the same person ran out of the country looking for medical attention in Germany.
Trained and qualified medical doctors are not labourers than can engaged on the streets.
