FIFA Rankings: Super Eagles move to 33rd spot

The Super Eagles, Thursday, continued their upward movement on the monthly FIFA rankings as they moved from 34th to 33rd ‎position in the August edition.

The Eagles, who jumped ten steps in the preceding month, July, however, remained static in the African rankings as they remain third on the continent behind Algeria and Cote d’ Ivoire who are ranked 24th and 25th in the world respectively.

Reigning world champions, Germany, maintained their place as the number one team in the world followed by Argentina and Netherlands in second and third positions respectively.

Colombia, Belgium, and Uruguay come in as the 4th, 5th and 6th teams in the world respectively.

The former number one team in the world, Spain, have gradually begun to move up after a disastrous outing at the Brazil World Cup saw them nosedive on the rankings. The Spaniards climbed one position and now share seventh place with Brazil.

Switzerland and France complete the roster of teams in the top ten.

As explained by the world football governing body, the ongoing 2015 AFCON qualifiers did African teams a lot of good as the biggest movers of the month are mainly to be found in continent namely Lesotho (105th, up 26), Malawi (106th, up 15), Sierra Leone (50th, up 14), Benin (77th, up 14), Botswana (86th, up 13) and Guinea-Bissau (123rd, up 13).

This month also sees Sierra Leone make their first appearance in the top 50. Sadly, the West African country have suspended all football activities owing to the outbreak of the dreaded Ebola Virus.
