How to end Boko Haram insurgency, by Buhari

Former military head of state, Gen, Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), wants an immediate end to bickering between the federal and state governments over security issues if the ongoing threats to life and property in the country must cease.

Buhari, reviewing the situation in the country, advocated a holistic approach.

“Security agencies of the (federal) government need closer cooperation with civilian security infrastructure which is in place but seldom considered as a part of the security effort,” he said against the backdrop of the effort to rescue the over 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram in Borno State.

He added: ”The local government structure from ward to district to state level is an excellent starting point for an over-all new security initiative. State-wide effort should be carefully coordinated with federal authorities. It should be a bottom-to-top operation. The bickering between Abuja and the states should cease if we are serious in wanting to win the war and end the conflict. All moneys voted must demonstrably be seen to be spent on security.”

He asked all Nigerians to “come together with unequivocal support to the government and security agencies in this fight against mindless violence and mad-cap ideologies.”

He said the country should have “one narrative” about Boko Haram, which he slammed as an abhorrent, anti-Islamic, anti-religion and anti-human sect.

He welcomed the internationalization of the rescue effort but said the command and control of the operation should be led by Nigerians while foreign forces should “respect the country’s sovereignty and be wary of local sensitivities.”

On the economy,General Buhari ,faulted the recent rebase of the economy which made Nigeria’s the largest in Africa.

He said the figures “are at variance with the lived experience of our citizens” with poverty, according to him, “so visible, so general and so extreme.”

Government, he stressed, “must take a serious look at our economic policy priorities and rebalance our policies in favour of agriculture and manufacturing to take people out of poverty and make them consumers for the expansion of the productive private sector and manufacturing.”

Such policies, he said, must create jobs for millions of young unemployed and create opportunities for the millions entering job market every year.

    1. We should stop the idea of hatred and insult to anyone if we want this country to overcome the security challenges we have at hand. We dont have the idea of the people behind the problem yet, we will be a failure as a country if we start accusing anyone now. Instead, we should try all available ideas that can give us result.

  3. Kudos 2 Gen Buhari's idea. Nation security should be primary aim nd ojective d way for Nigeria nd Nigerians. There's religion on earth that encourage insulgency be it Muslim or Christianity. Both institutions is under dispensation of almighty God, nd since no human can give life except God alone, so human no matter how highly placed is In position to take nd destroy life which in anycase is absolutely at d authority of God's dispensation. We must remember no amount of riches or money can bribe our God, if it be so whose re those corrupt money nd property u're heaping-up? We must remember one thing certain's everyone will be rewarded according 2 his/her stewarship, good or bad.

    1. I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU PEOPLE ARE BLIND TO REALITY. IF A MAN OUT OF GOVT CAN HOLD THE GOVT TO RANSOME(IF AT HE IS AS MANY ARE CLAIMING), THEN MANY THINGS ARE WRONG. IS IT THE GENERAL THAT SAYS NIGERIA MILITARY SHOULD BE UNDERFUNDED, IS HE THE MAN THAT SAYS CORRUPTION SHOULD BE THE BEDROCK OF FORMER AND MOST ESPECIALLY THIS CURRENT ADMINISTRATION? IF THE MAN TALK, WE WILL SAY HE IS SAYING RUBBISH. IF HE DOESN'T TALK, WE WILL SAY ANOTHER THING. I MEAN NOT TO INSULT ANYBODY BUT WERE ARE THE VOICES OF SOUTH EAST GOVERNORS, SOUTH SOUTH GOVERNORS ETC. GO TO BAYELSA, RIVERS, AKWA IBOM AND TELL ME THE GENERAL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR UNDER DEVELOPMENT. IS THE GENERAL ALSO RESPONSIBLE ANAMBRA, ABIA NORTH HAVING AIRPORTS ETC. WITH ALL THE RESOURCES IN THE AFOREMENTIONED STATES, LEADERSHIP VISION AS BEEN AN ISSUE. THE WIFE OF A PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA CAN NOT SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH FOR JUST A MINUTE AND A HALF. FRIENDS, THE TRUTH IS THAT, SOME PEOPLE DOES NOT HAVE ANY BUSINESS IN GOVT. WHETHER THEY ARE FROM SOUTHEAST NI OR SOUTHSOUTH NI OR SOUTHWEST OR NORTH. AS LONG WE ARE NOT READY TO THE DEMAND THE BEST FOR OUR COUNTRY, WE ARE ALL JOKERS. LETS WAKE UP AND SALVAGE OUR NATION FROM MEDIOCRES AND UNFIT LEADERS. IF SOME PEOPLE HAVE VOWED THAT THEY WON'T ALLOW YOU TO RULE PEACFULLY, THEN USE YOUR POWER LEGETIMATELY AS THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF TO MAKE LIFE UNBEARABLE FOR THEM. THE TRUTH IS, THIS CAN NOT BE THE BEST SOUTHSOUTH AS GOT TO OFFER. I REST MY CASE.

    2. First and foremost. Internet etiquette lets us know that screaming on a blog is immature.
When you write in CAPS, that is screaming, like throwing a tantrum or if i can put it to better perspective, what a 2yr old does when a lollipop is taken from her or him.

You are not the most patriotic or most passionate about the issues of Nigeria. Just articulate yourself and your arguments like an adult and pirahhh! like everyone else. I rest my case.

  9. I believe sites like this are there for intellectually minded youths of Nigeria to come together and tink of ways to foster peace and unity amongst us. To speak in one voice as we neva know whose idea or whose strategy can help combat the cankerworm that has infested us as a nation. But dis medium has been degenrated into an avenue for myopic minded pple who come here and rant off their mouths showing how d very disease of illiteracy has eaten deep into nigeria youth despite being educated. How can we move forward pple. Pls tink before u talk, God has a purpose for bringing us together as a pple of one nation except if we are saying the good Lord doesn't know wat he is doing, which is blasphemous to say. So pple pls look beyond religious and ethnic sentimentalism and fight for wat is truth irrespective of where u come from. Plllssss. Tink Well

  10. True talk my brother but truth be told if one religion is daily being killed and the other rejoices because to them their gospel is gaining ground what do u expect the reaction to be. When u insist that it is only a particular region and religion that must rule or the whole country burns what do u what ppl to say no matter their literate level? BH.is I believe the creation of the northern political class but we so protect and rever them. We should be good losers when and if we lose. Buhari's body language during and after the last election was nothing to write home about. Churches were burnt in Katsina state during the elections what did Mr General say? What has the church got to do with him losing or Jonathan rigging elections?
To be candid why did Buhari wait for so long b4 talking? That means in my opinion it does not even if they (infidels) are killed since they refused to vote for me. The tide has turned bh are now killing everybody and our number is reducing by the day. Tell me my brother do u think an average northern christian now trusts his brother a nothern muslim. When the late Yakowa died, a section of the north were jubilating why? Because he is christian. Bros we have a big work to do to truly become one again.

  15. I have been reading the comments we have been making on this medium. If we really don't have any reasonable thing to add, even if it be a prayer for Nigeria, pls its better we keep quiet in other not to discourage others. This shows lack off home training. Our house is burning and we a pursuing rat. Do you no your suggestion can make a difference? Why waste so much energy in destroying rather than constructing. We might or might not be in a position of authority. But pls my dearest, let's channel our energy towards helping our leaders in every way we can to solve this giant problem.
